What does aquamarine mean?
Aquamarine’s name is Latin for seawater, and ancient sailors believed it would calm the waves and keep them safe at sea. It was also thought to bring happiness in marriage.
Good stones are often as clear as water, which is why aquamarine stands for purity of spirit. The color runs from light, slightly greenish blue to deep green-blue.
What does bloodstone mean?
Bloodstone is dark green with red spots of iron oxide, the “blood” in its name. In ancient times it was believed that, placed in water, it would turn the sun red.
Over the centuries it was said to bring strength, courage and even invisibility. Many still see it as a lucky charm, and athletes prize it for strength.
To turn the sun
Heliotrope, bloodstone’s other name, from the ancient Greek.
Where do the March birthstones come from?
Aquamarine has come from Minas Gerais in Brazil for two centuries, and from high in Pakistan’s Karakoram foothills, where miners climb steep paths to work above 9,800 feet. It is also mined across Africa, and in Colorado, where it is the state gem.
Most bloodstone today comes from India. It is also found in Brazil, Australia, China and the United States, sometimes as pebbles in riverbeds.
